Okay so editors note. I made a vid years ago. I started with bootlegs and then eventually replaced it with actual DVD footage once the DVD’s came out.

So here is the thing. Some of my bootlegs were from European PAL format DVD’s and some from US DVD’s or live broadcasts and some from Canadian live broadcasts. PAL is 25 frames per second. USA film is 23.976 frames per second if I recall correctly. So on my US DVD’s and on the live broadcast Dean’s voice actually sounds quite deep but slightly higher and less resonant on the PAL. I’m guessing they just sped up the video without pitch correction when they converted to PAL format for European distribution. But then I think they actually started pitch correcting in later seasons?

I mean his voice did get a little deeper, but I think the drop wasn’t as dramatic as ppl think because audio processing shenanigans.

I agree on often disliking human AUs because I watch sci-fi/fantasy for the exploration of otherness, and what it means to be other, which I relate to both as a sexual minority and as a racial minority. Human AUs often take away much of that.

On the other hand I’m all the more impressed with the rare human AU that manages to preserve the metaphor even in a more realistic setting.

For example my favorite Merlin AU is one in which Arthur is a warlord and Merlin is essentially a con man and they use well placed gossip and sleight of hand to convince ALL OF BRITAIN that Arthur is the chosen one come to unite them as foretold by this ancient prophesy Merlin wrote up the other night.

I keep seeing posts where people say, “But Kate Argent honestly believed she was acting for the greater good!” Or “Kate just had really strong convictions, and even though they were misguided, the fact that she had convictions is admirable!”

JUSTIFICATIONS ARE NOT BELIEFS. PREJUDICES ARE NOT ADMIRABLE.

Sexist politicans “believe” that girls should have their clothing and their bodies policed because of how detrimental their bodies/choices might be to the men around them and then insist that their pro-rape-culture policies are “for the greater good.”

Parents who beat their kids tell themselves “I’m just being reasonably strict” and “it’s for their own good.”

During the Inquisition, priests “believed” that any woman in a position of power was a witch, and tortured midwives and pagan priestesses to “save” them, and then killed them “for the greater good” of their patriarchal society.

Homophobes “believe” that gay marriage is corrupting the youth and destroying the stability of the American family and that it must be stopped “for the greater good.”

Black people were given segregated bathrooms because the white patriarchy “believed” that they would spread diseases and even had “science” to back up their “convictions.”

Kate Argent victimized a teenaged boy and then told herself that her actions were good and right because he was less than human.

This is predator logic. It doesn’t matter who is being victimized, predators always tell themselves that their victims are less than human, and that therefore anything done to their victims is justifiable, or that they are acting for the victim’s own good, or for the good of society.

Predators “believe” because it is convenient, because it flatters their egos, because it justifies their sins.

Kate Argent’s “beliefs” and “convictions” are a steaming pile of bullshit. People in this fandom need to stop covering that bullshit in whipped cream and sprinkles and calling it a sundae.

I want to give special shout-outs to Luna and Parrotfish, two of my favorite YA novels.

I’d also add that Every Day by David Levithan is, in a way, a really good book about a non-binary character. Part of what makes A and Rhiannon’s love story so unique and compelling is that it exists outside of binary constructions of gender and sex identity.
